2023 MFP Fall Intensive Training Institute

The FAHS Minority Fellowship Program hosted its annual Fall Intensive Training Institute from November 15-19, 2023, In San Diego, CA.  The theme for this training was ‘culturally informed strategies to recovery and harm reduction.’ With the goal of preparing culturally attuned practitioners, Our Fellows participated in a cultural immersion experience at the Barona Cultural Center and Museum, a Native/Indigenous American reservation, whereby they learned firsthand the ways cultures overlap, interrelate, and evolve together and among each other. Within the trainings, Fellows learned more systemic understandings of the impact of substance abuse on families, relationships, and individuals, especially within historically underrepresented and underserved populations. There was a focus on increased familiarity with the major cutting-edge issues and research within the field of MFT, substance abuse, and underrepresented and underserved populations. Ultimately, Fellows cane away with a clearer vision of how this training will segue to an engagement with service and clinical work with underserved populations of interest to the Fellow.
